Violins of the WorldThe Violins Of The World is the brainchild of French Gypsy guitarist and composer Mathias Duplessy.  It brings together the rhythms and melodies of many different cultures in an incredible new style of exotic and unique arrangements.

Asian always, spirit of the blues often, and Celtic rhythms and melodies of the Mongolian steppe offer an astonishing cross-cultural encounter.   The four virtuosos bridge the gap between tradition and modernity.

The group consists of Guo Gan from China with his fiddle Erhu;  Dalaijargal Daansuren from Mongolia with the horse-headed fiddle and throat singing, and Frenchman Aliocha Regnard with the Scandinavian fiddle (Nyckelharpa), backed by Duplessy’s propulsive acoustic guitar.

Their first record, Mathias Duplessy & The Violins Of The World, was followed by a successful world tour that opened people’s eyes and ears to the band’s amazing musical abilities.   They are back with a new album, Brothers Of Strings (released in January 2020), a road movie of new worlds, from the Gobi, to China and the ancient Far East,  including wild covers of Morricone’s “The Good, the Bad and The Ugly” and Dire Straits’ “Brothers In Arms.”

In Fall 2022, Duplessy & The Violins Of The World will tour the United States for the first time and will return for their 2nd US tour in May 2024.

Mathias Duplessy

A self-taught musician, Mathias began composing on his guitar from the age of 6, passionate about classical music, and more particularly Ravel.  Then he discovered jazz, Miles Davis, John Coltrane ...

At 18 Mathias learned Flamenco among the gypsies. He invented and developed his own particular techniques with the right hand (rasaguedo) which he used on stage and in his compositions.

In love with traditional music, he learned to play instruments from all around the world: Morin khuur, Igil, fiddles, jew’s-harp, berimbao, flutes and percussions of all kinds, saz, oud, and banjo can be found in his orchestrations.

Mathias likes to divert, mix, reinvent the artistic universe of these instruments far from the paths of their origins by superimposing his voice, sometimes voluptuous, sometimes diphonic.

Mathias composes regularly for films and documentaries.  His work is particularly marked by composers such as Nino Rota, Ennio Morricone, Michel Legrand or Vladimir Cosma.

Mathias Duplessy created the project "The Violins of the World", surrounded by Guo Gan, Chinese master of Erhu, Aliocha Regnard, virtuoso of the Swedish Nyckelharpa and Enkhjargal Dandarvaanchign, one of the great Mongol masters of the “horse-headed fiddle”.

Since 2010, The Violins of the World have produced 3 albums and performed around the world.

In 2011 Mathias met Jeremy Jouve who would become the ambassador of his pieces for classical guitar, now played by the greatest international soloists.

Insatiable, curious, Mathias Duplessy never ceased to diversify his sources of inspiration, and to collaborate with artists from all traditions, breaking down the boundaries of genres, leading to his unparalleled style.
